Family blames hospital for 24-year-old woman’s death

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: Angered over the death of a woman after anaesthesia before surgery, her relatives gathered around a privately-run hospital in Pammal on Wednesday night.

S. Kannagi (24) was admitted to the hospital on Pammal Main Road for minor surgery on her nose. Saravanan, her husband, said that she was complaining of “sinus related” ailments for some time and as medication could not help her, they decided to go ahead with surgery to correct the defect.

On Wednesday, she was admitted to the hospital around 10 a.m. and after a day-long observation, was taken to the operation theatre around 6 p.m. In his complaint to Shankar Nagar police, Mr. Saravanan said that soon after she was taken into the operation theatre, staff rushed out of it, causing him and his relatives much anxiety.

Thirty minutes later, doctors emerged from the operation theatre and told him Kannagi had died of cardiac arrest. He charged that improper treatment had resulted in the death of his wife and that a thorough investigation should be conducted. “She does not suffer from any complication or illness and she was cheerful when she went inside the operation theatre,” an upset Saravanan told reporters on Thursday.

Hospital authorities said pre-operative measures were taken as per protocol and all necessary tests conducted. They denied the charges of an overdose of anaesthesia or improper medication. They said that just as they were beginning to put her on incubation to get her ready for the surgery, Kannagi suffered a massive cardiac arrest.

Even after she died, they stuck to the procedures spelt out by Indian Medical Association, informing the family and Shankar Nagar police of the death. Following the complaint, a case was registered and post-mortem performed at Chromepet GH. Police said further investigation would be carried out based on the post-mortem results. The couple had married six years ago and have two children.
