VIJAYAWADA: Congress that was instrumental in getting Independence for the country is also solely responsible for its development, Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries Mandali Buddha Prasad has said here on Thursday. Addressing party workers at a meeting held to felicitate freedom fighters on the 65th Quit India Day celebrations Mr Prasad said the primary concern of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was eradication of poverty. It was the work done by her that stands the Congress Party in good stead even today. Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy was implementing the thoughts of Indira Gandhi. The Telugu Desam leaders had no moral right to criticise him, he said. The Telugu Desam Party that was talking about land reforms now, shelved them while it was at the helm of affairs, he said. When the TDP was in power only those selected by the MLA were given houses and the party legislators were partial to their partymen. But Dr Reddy had come out with a scheme to provide housing to all families without a shelter. The city committee felicitated freedom fighters Penna Srirammurthy, Parakala Pattabhirama Rao, Vemireddi Satyanarayana Reddy, Avva Appa Rao, Arja Rama Rao, Pothina Paidayamma, B Mariamma and J Kanakamma. MLC Ilapuram Venkaiah felicitated the freedom fighters. Kankipadu MLA Devineni Rajasekhar, Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority chairman Malladi Vishnu, Durga - Malleswaraswamivarla Devasthanams Trust Board chairman Narayana Reddy, Vijayawada Mayor Mallika Begum, city party president Pyla Sominaidu and general secretary Chennupati Srinivasa Rao participated.
