Flood level in the Godavari close to the danger mark; roads come under sheet of water

rising concern: The flood level of the Godavari at Dowleswaram Barrage in Rajahmundry was recorded at 10.80 feet by 2 p.m. on Thursday .

BHADRACHALAM: Twelve villages were being evacuated more as a precautionary measure as the flood level in the Godavari is close to the danger mark. Some 502 families were shifted to relief camps from the affected villages. Standing crops, particularly cotton, in hundreds of acres were inundated in the low-lying areas, while the roads in Bhadrachalam and Palvancha division came under a sheet of water at different points.

The second flood warning was issued as the water level in the river crossed 48 feet at 6 a.m. The third warning will be issued some time around midnight as the water touches 53 feet at the temple town. Two of its tributaries - Indravathi and Pranahita - were in spate for the past two days due to heavy rain in the catchment.

Families shifted

Some families from riverside localities such as Subashnagar Colony were shifted to two relief camps set up in the town. The leakage from the flood bank sluices, which was a source of concern for residents, was also arrested. The operation of bus services beyond Bhadrachalam – particularly in the Chintoor, Kunavaram and Charla routes was suspended. District Collector Shashibushan Kumar said that 13 mandal-level teams were deputed to the affected areas. Some 26 persons caught in the flood waters in a river island near Venkatapuram were rescued by the official teams on Wednesday night.

Situation grim

KURNOOL: Flood situation is likely to be grim along Tungabhadra river course for the next two days. River bank farmers have been the worst victims in both Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts. Hundreds of pumpsets were drenched and two to three month-old crops were under water.Floodwater reached seven villages in Kautalam and three in Kosigi mandals. Meanwhile, the flood conservator of Dhawaleswaram barrage issued first warning signal on Thursday night as the water levels in river Godavari has just crossed the danger level of 11.75 feet. District Collector M. Subrahmanyam put Revenue and Irrigation officials on high alert and asked them to take precautionary steps.
