CHENNAI: Port and dock workers unions in major ports across the country plan to go on indefinite strike from September 1 to press for demands including restoration of retirement age from 58 to 60 years. They are demanding a monthly interim relief of Rs. 1000 to all workers and pensioners with effect from January 1, 2007 till a new wage settlement is signed. They are also demanding merger of 50 per cent of the DA and filling of all vacancies.
The Water Transport Workers’ Federation of India, All India Port and Dock Workers Federation, All India Port and Dock Workers Federation (Workers), Port, Dock and Water Front Workers Federation and Indian National Port and Dock Workers Federation have instructed their affiliated unions to serve the strike notice on port managements on August 16.
