Replace transmission lines and distribution wires, says farmers’ body
PERAMBALUR: Members of ‘Tamizhaga Vivasyigal Sangam’ staged a novel protest here on Thursday, protesting ‘unscheduled tripping of power,’ disrupting agricultural operation in parts of the district.
Tying the eyes with a piece of black cloth and carrying a stick, they marched from Sangupettai to the office of the Superintending Engineer of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) where they submitted a memorandum, seeking immediate action by the TNEB to ensure an assured power supply to agricultural pump sets.
Speaking on the occasion, the State general secretary of the association, K. Sundaram, said that unscheduled power trips and low-voltage not only crippled agricultural operation, but also damaged pump sets.
The State treasurer, P. Velumani, and the State secretary, R. Raja Chidambaram, said that the situation became serious during February and June, when the hydel power generation at Mettur registered a dip.
They also wanted transmission lines and distribution wires in rural areas to be replaced for checking the power loss.
Although the State Government sanctioned funds for setting up additional 10,000 transformers to ease distribution of power, no step had been taken for replacing power transmission lines, they said.
