IN SPATE: Inundated houses along the banks of the Cauvery in Erode district.
ERODE: The flood situation along the banks of the Cauvery in Erode district turned grim on Thursday with discharge from the Mettur dam going up to 1,08,585 cusecs. The discharge from the Bhavani Sagar dam was 20,500 cusecs at 4 p.m. The release of water into the Lower Bhavani Project Canal had been stopped, according to sources. At Karungalpalayam, the increased flow in the Cauvery inundated houses. Revenue Department officials said 100 families had moved to safer places. Two marriage halls have been kept ready. The water level was increasing since Wednesday night and by Thursday afternoon the roads were partially under water. Sanitary staff of the B.P. Agraharam town panchayat sprayed bleaching powder mixed with lime to prevent the outbreak of disease in the affected areas. The residents refused to shift to the marriage halls. At Pallipalayam, the situation was marginally better. Twenty huts at Sathya Nagar were under water. At Komarapalayam, the officials were keeping a close watch on the water level. Steady increase
Staff Reporter from Dharmapuri writes: Incessant rain in the catchment area in Karnataka over the past few days resulted in a steady increase in flow at the Hogenakkal Falls, 46 km from here. Pavements at the main entrance to the falls are flooded. Tourists have been barred from bathing and restrictions imposed on coracle rides. According to official sources, the inflow had crossed 1 lakh cusecs. The flow was being monitored at Biligundulu on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border. An official team is camping at Hogenakkal. The police have put up barricades at the main falls and other vantage points in Hogenakkal. Fire and Rescue service personnel have been deployed at Hogenakkal to tackle any emergency situation. The district administration has asked people living in low-lying areas to move to safer places.
