Special Correspondent

Number of Lok Sabha, Assembly seats will remain same

VELLORE: The Constituency Delimitation Commission headed by Kuldip Singh will announce, within a day or two, the list of the newly reorganised Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, according to D. Chandrasekharan, State Election Commissioner (SEC) and member of the Commission.

Talking to newspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Chandrasekharan said the number of Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu would remain the same at 39 and 234 even after the reorganisation.

During the public hearing, suggestions were made that the Tirupattur Lok Sabha constituency (comprising three Assembly constituencies each from Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts), the Natrampalli Assembly constituency in Vellore district, the Padmanabhapuram Assembly constituency in Kanyakumari district and Triplicane Assembly constituency in Chennai should be retained.

Mr. Chandrasekharan said the Delimitation Commission has examined all the suggestions.

The delimitation had been done as per the Constitutional provisions.

The delimitation had been done in such a way as to ensure that each Assembly constituency, on an average, had a total electorate of 2.66 lakh, he said.
