VELLORE: State Election Commissioner D. Chandrasekharan has called upon the students to develop their communication skills and study with single-minded concentration, without allowing themselves to be distracted by cinema.

Delivering the keynote address at the investiture ceremony of the Student Welfare Council of Voorhees College here on Thursday, Mr. Chandrasekharan said the mission of education was to mould the students into good citizens by inculcating patriotism, selflessness and good manners in them.

Any educational institution should ensure a harmonious growth of the minds, he said.

D. Daniel Ezhilarasu, Principal and Secretary of Voorhees College, said the Student Welfare Council would implement schemes for the welfare of the community.

The college had 2,200 students including 300 women. Of the total number of students, 600 are from the Backward Classes, 479 from the Most Backward Classes, 685 from the Scheduled Castes and 30 from the Scheduled Tribes.
