PUDUCHERRY: Double taxation for inter-State buses of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will soon be a thing of the past. This was decided at a meeting to discuss the inter-State agreement between transport officials of the two States here on Thursday. Tamil Nadu Transport Minister K. N. Nehru and other officials agreed to reduce the bus permit ratio from 1:4 to 1:3 by which for every one bus permit that Puducherry gets Tamil Nadu will get three bus permits. Transport Minister MOHF Shahjahan and other officials represented Puducherry and sought inter-State permits for private buses as well. Modification of routes
Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Shahjahan said Tamil Nadu had also agreed in principle to modification of routes for 50 Puducherry buses and 128 of its own. “A committee has been set up consisting of officials from both sides and they will come to a decision within a month’s time. The inter-State agreement on transport will be signed in about 3 months time,” he added. Previous agreement
The previous agreement was signed in 1985, when Puducherry did not have a transport corporation. In the case of goods carriers, under the old agreement, permits were issued on a 1:10 basis; this has been revised to 1:6. “For autorickshaws and share autos we have asked Tamil Nadu to allow our vehicles up to a distance of 10 km on the basis of reciprocity. They have agreed in principle but this has to be approved by their Government,” said Mr. Shahjahan. Puducherry has agreements with Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
