GUWAHATI: Tezpur airfield, one of the oldest airfields in the North Eastern region, will be closed to civil aviation for a year from October 1 for repair and re-surfing of the runway. Only military helicopters will be permitted to operate, according to a Defence press release on Thursday. The runway condition has significantly deteriorated and this may affect the safety of aircraft. In the larger interests of the public and keeping in view the stipulated safety of the aircraft, resurfacing of the runway and allied works are operationally inescapable, it said. The IAF will undertake the repair work. After repairs, the airfield would become safer, more effective and reliable, the release said.
