Police target Congress rally

Manas Dasgupta

GANDHINAGAR: Lathi-wielding policemen chased away demonstrating Congress workers here on Thursday to prevent them from “gheraoing” the Secretariat.

The State Congress planned a “Jan Kranti rally” as part of the “August Kranti” celebrations in the State capital and “gherao” the Secretariat to highlight the “failures” of the Narendra Modi Government. After the police dispersed them, a party delegation presented a six-page memorandum to Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma, listing the “failures” of the State administration.

Even as the meeting was in progress about 2 km away from the Secretariat building and leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Arjun Modhvadia was addressing the gathering, the police began bursting teargas shells. Lathi-wielding policemen then targeted the gathering that included media personnel covering the event.

The Congress spokesman claimed that at least 30 party workers were injured.
