Sanggeetha traps Bharathi

Chennai: National Women’s ‘A’ player R. Sanggeetha of Chennai won a rook via a trap to defeat R. Bharathi and be among the five leaders with 4.5 points at the end of the fifth round of the S.K. Narasihman Memorial FIDE-rating chess tournament here on Thursday.

Sanggeetha shares the lead with Abhilash Reddy of Vijayawada, C. Praveen Kumar of Chennai, G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank and P. Maheswaran of Sivakasi.

International Master norm holder Praveen Kumar played the Benoni with black and sacrificed an exchange. Abhilash Reddy returned the material and played a draw in 49 moves.

Eager to simplify the position, M.V. Lakshmi Narayanan of Kodaikanal lost a pawn and soon got into a mating net to lose in 38 moves to the experienced G.B. Prakash of Chennai. Maheswaran of Sivakasi had to work long for 60 moves to win and share the lead.
