The week-long freedom struggle centenary celebrations commenced in Madras on August 10. Distribution of medals and certificates by the Chief Minister, Mr. K. Kamaraj, to winners in various sports and athletic competitions conducted for school and college students, and inauguration of a film festival by the Home Minister, Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam, were the highlights of the opening day’s programme. Screening of Gemini’s ‘Avvaiyar’ to a large audience at the open-air theatre in Congress Grounds, Teynampet, marked the opening of the film festival. At the Rajaratnam Stadium, Mr. Kamaraj, after taking the salute at a march-past provided by the athletes, exhorted them to dedicate themselves to the task of preserving the hard-won freedom of the country.
