Plan for harbour welcomed

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Latin Catholic Fishermen Federation has welcomed the State Government decision to allocate Rs.27 lakh for conducting a feasibility study for a fishing harbour in Valiathura.

In a release here on Friday, the members of the federation said a harbour at Valiathura would be an asset to the State, which earns nearly Rs 2,350 every year in terms of foreign exchange revenue from various harbours in the State. It is estimated that the harbour would benefit nearly 50,000 fishermen, around 30 percent of the total number of fishermen in the State, residing in Thiruvananthapuram.

The federation is also of the view that a harbour could usher in a comprehensive development of the locality with opportunities for employment in a number of allied areas such as peeling centres, ice plants, and export factories, and transportation..
