CHENNAI: A male tiger from Visakhapatnam will be brought to the Vandalur Zoo on Friday, as part of an animal exchange programme. The zoo is currently home to three tigresses and two white tigers.
Deputy Director of the Vandalur Zoo Nihar Ranjan said the male tiger was being brought to enable breeding.
“A pair of Nilgiri Langurs and wild dogs will be given to the Indira Gandhi Zoo in Vishakapatnam,” he said.
Wildlife authorities said that after the death of male tiger Lakshman sometime ago, they had been considering bringing another male tiger to the Zoo, which has not bred tigers in the recent past.
The four-year-old male tiger would be brought to Chennai by train and it is expected to reach the zoo around 11 a.m. on Friday, said Wildlife authorities.
Apart from the tiger, the Vandalur Zoo will also soon get a pair of Khaleej pheasants and four-horned antelopes from other zoos in Andhra Pradesh. The pheasants and antelopes will arrive at the zoo some time later, authorities said.
