Riding on this stretch at night is frightening Law and order

Fatal accidents on the stretch between TVS Toll Gate and Palpannai traffic circle are common, says R. Rajaram

three is a crowd: A lorry and a car overtaking another lorry on the Ponmalai bridge on Chennai Bypass Road in Tiruchi.

Two road accidents were reported on the Chennai Bypass Road within a span of few hours on Thursday and one occurred close to the Senthaneerpuram over-bridge holding traffic movement on the busy road for half-an-hour.

One accident occurred when a lorry transporting iron fabrications overturned while applying sudden brake near the bridge after a car dashed on it, injuring the drivers of both vehicles, and the other involved a bus and a two-wheeler.

An accident-prone zone, the stretch between TVS Toll Gate and Palpannai Roundabout along the Chennai Bypass Road witnesses such accidents at periodic intervals mainly owing to rule violations by speeding motorists.

Rash driving, over-speeding, and worst, overtaking on bridges by motorists are a day-to-day feature on this road. Riding on the stretch, particularly after dark, is turning out to be a nightmare.

The rough edges of the road, surface cracks and uneven patchworks have compounded the problem for two-wheeler riders.

The difficulty caused by speeding vehicles on this road that is now being developed for four-laning is precipitated by continuous honking by heavy vehicles. Since the road does not have a median, heavy vehicles with blinding lights passing in a single direction occupy the entire breadth of the road while overtaking, virtually stranding and exposing to danger of accidents those coming from the opposite direction.

Poor lighting

Vehicle-users also complain of poor lighting on the stretch from Palpannai roundabout to Senthaneerpuram, leading to fatal accidents.

The irony is the stretch comes under the city limits. Increased police presence and stern action against rule violators could act as a deterrent, says the general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation, M. Sekaran. With the number of vehicles increasing by the day, the stretch warrants an exclusive highway patrol unit for penalising the errant drivers, he said.

The Federation has written to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the Corporation seeking immediate restoration of streetlights from Palpannai Roundabout to Senthaneerpuram.

National Highway authorities say that four-laning would result in a smooth ride on the stretch. They are prepared to take up surface renewal work in the interim.

Police sources say efforts have been taken to penalise vehicles that are parked on the roadsides near Palpannai Roundabout.

A reserve sub-inspector has been posted there to ensure that vehicles are not parked on the roadsides up to Senthaneerpuram.
