Officials are redesigning traffic islands and road medians, writes V.S. Palaniappan
A team of officials will identify road engineering aspects that will make roads safer for motorists. The Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, C.K. Gandhirajan and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), S. Manoharan have deputed the team, which will coordinate with Highways Department and Corporation officials.
The authorities are also identifying lamp posts and tree branches that obstruct traffic movement on the roads. Motorists want attention to be paid to bus stops located close to traffic signals and road curves that hinder vehicular movement.
Officials are redesigning traffic islands to make them motorist-friendly. For example a traffic island at Stanes Junction used to be tall with thick greenery. Now the huge island has been reduced to a smaller one with minimum greenery.
The reduced height enabled better visibility for motorists to notice oncoming traffic, besides making available more road space.
The authorities are now studying the traffic flow pattern at the Lanka Corner Junction. The islands at Sungam Junction on Tiruchi Road and near the Court premises and DSP office junction on Huzur Road are also getting attention.
