Chip in with aid, people urged

Centre’s assistance will not suffice for flood relief: Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar has called on the public to support the Government’s efforts to provide relief for the victims of natural calamities during monsoon.

He was presiding over a meeting of district-level officials and traders to mobilise funds for relief activities.

The Minister said the State had suffered a loss of Rs.1,500 crore this monsoon season.

“Assistance from the Central Government will not be sufficient to tide over a loss of this magnitude. It requires the active participation of people from all walks of life.” Mr. Vijayakumar called on the public to come forward to support the Government’s relief activities.

Rehabilitation

He said the thrust of the relief work would be to rehabilitate families who have lost houses.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu, MLA J. Arundhati MLA, panchayat president Anavoor Nagappan, Additional District Magistrate K. Surendran, officials, traders, restaurant owners and representatives of travel agencies, Chamber of Commerce and public sector units participated in the meeting.
