Leaving no stone unturned Law and order

Security tightened for Sonia Gandhi’s visit, says

S. Vijay Kumar

Each time a VVIP visits Madurai, it is a challenging task for the police.

While threat perceptions always escalate, the topography, manpower and infrastructure almost remain the same.

No security scheme is exhaustive but law enforcing agencies show no reluctance when it comes to working towards a foolproof security system. The United Progressive Alliance chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, is scheduled to visit the city on Sunday along with the Union Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad, and the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, to inaugurate the first train service on the broad gauge track between Rameswaram and Chennai. Ms. Gandhi will dedicate to the nation the newly laid Manamadurai-Rameswaram BG line. According to police, the Congress president faces threat from various banned outfits, including the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, and is covered by sleuths of the Special Protection Group.

The function is being organised at the Madurai Medical College grounds. The city police have made elaborate security arrangements, leaving no stone unturned. Frisking teams will be deployed at the function place where all visitors will be made to pass through metal detector frames. Strict access control will be maintained around the stage and VIP gallery.

Quick Reaction Teams are to be positioned strategically in different parts of the city to counter emergency situations. Anti-sabotage checks will be carried out at the airport and venue of the function, besides the VVIP route. “Plainclothesmen will be posted on all high rise buildings along the VVIP route. Thorough anti-sabotage checks will be conducted at culverts, bridges, manholes, etc.

After the blast in Tirupati in which the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, was injured, we are not even sparing walls, mason bunds and bushes. Traffic arrangements would be such that vehicle movement will be restricted not only along the VIP route but also on roads intersecting with it,” a senior police official said.

The police are keeping fire tenders positioned at vantage points while providing adequate entry/exit routes at the function place. Certificates for structural stability for the stage, electrical installation durability and sound amplifier would be obtained from the competent authority. “We have decided not to allow mobile phones into the venue. Adequate number of plainclothesmen will mingle with the audience as a precautionary measure,” the official added.

At least 1,500 police personnel would be deployed , police sources said.
