Food Minister E.V. Velu presenting the Government Order to open 10 more fair price shops in Tirupur to M. Rajasekaran, Regional Joint Director, Cooperative Societies, on Friday.

TIRUPUR: In an attempt to mitigate the sufferings of public waiting in queues for essential commodities, Food Minister E.V. Velu on Friday ordered the opening of 10 more fair price shops in Tirupur.

After presenting the orders, Mr. Velu told reporters that a shop could normally handle 1,500 family cards and if the number went up it would affect the service at the shop and also the customers.

In Tirupur, 64 shops had been functioning with 1.10 lakh family cards.

Some shops had been functioning with over 4,000 cards. Mr. Velu said that it had been decided to bifurcate 20 shops in the town and in the first phase shops would be opened at Anna Colony, Golden Nagar, Chellam Nagar, Gopal Nagar, Indira Street, Sathya Nagar, Samundipuram, Mannarai, Pudukkadu and Konganagiri in a month.

The Minister said that construction of buildings were over for these shops and another 10 shops would be inaugurated soon.

Expressing concern over the high rental expenditure here, Mr. Velu asked the officials to construct buildings for these shops on the Government sites with the help of private sponsors, if necessary.

On distribution of family cards, Mr. Velu said that a total of 8,635 cards would be issued in Tirupur from Saturday following spot verification.

The District Supply Officer and revenue authorities were taking efforts to issue the cards smoothly to the applicants. He further said that the drive against bogus family cards would go on.

Coimbatore Collector Neeraj Mittal, MLAs C. Govindasamy (Tirupur), A.S. Mani (Pongalur) and officials participated in the review meeting.
