Save lives: A banner urging the Government to construct median from SAP Theater to Gandhi Nagar on Avanashi Road in Tirupur put up by activists of Communist Party of India.

TIRUPUR: Irked over the delay in putting up a median on the accident-prone Avanashi Road in Tirupur, many organisations have began a campaign urging the Government to save human lives from accidents.

Big banners have been put up by the Padmavathipuram branch of Communist Party of India and All India Youth Federation highlighting the demand for constructing a median.

Travelling on the busy Avanashi Road has become a nightmare for motorists with increasing number of accidents. Residents complained that they could not cross the road from one side to the other at Padmavathipuram, SAP Theatre, Kumar Nagar, Asher Mills and Bungalow Stop areas due to speeding vehicles. There was no pedestrian cross, they added.

Councillor P.R. Natarajan pointed out that the stretch between Tirupur Illam and Gandhi Nagar had become a high-risk area and nearly a dozen people were killed in accidents on the stretch.

“We have been making representations to highways authorities but in vain. The authorities are not permitting even the sponsors,” he said.

The activists demanded erection of a traffic signal at the Gandhi Nagar Junction where four roads join. They urged the Government to construct a shelter for passengers at Prime Tex Gate.

CPI functionary P.V. Venugopal said that they would send a petition with 5,000 signatures to the Collector pressing these demands. He insisted that the median should be constructed from Pushpa Theatre Junction to Anupparpalayam. Police personnel should be posted at important junctions to help pedestrians cross the road.

Highways officials here said that they were taking steps to put up a divider.
