TIRUCHI: As a value addition measure in colleges, teachers should develop study content and post them on the intranet as a perennial reference material for students, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, M. Ponnavaiko, said on Thursday.

Releasing the first issue of ‘Voice of Santhanam,’ a newsletter of the Srimati Indira Gandhi College and the college magazine for the year, he emphasised on videographing special lectures and posting them on the net to facilitate students to grasp the concepts well and maximise the benefits of classroom teaching. Computers must be used in all spheres of learning, he said.

“Unacceptable practice”

Acknowledging the inevitability of learning English as a language to be in the reckoning of the job market in a globalised scenario, the Vice-Chancellor, however, felt that the practice of some of the autonomous colleges to utilise the time meant for study of Tamil for core subjects was not acceptable.

“It is an injustice. A firm grounding in Tamil will help students easily acquire skills in other languages,” he explained, and informed that the university would bring in a system to restore Tamil its due importance. Contents on Sangam literature and Tirukkural must be made a necessary part of Tamil learning to root the students in the native culture and imbibe discipline, he said.

He paid encomiums on the late founder of the college, Santhanam for his constructive role as an educationist, and suggested presentation of the latter’s messages in the subsequent issues of the newsletter.

He presented the first copy of the newsletter to the Vice- President of College Management Council, S. Vasudevan.

The Principal, K. Meena, said late Santhanam strived for an educational system that would infuse self-confidence in the minds of women and lead to economic independence. The College Secretary S. Kunjithapatham offered felicitations.
