PUDUKOTTAI: The Tamil Nadu Assembly Estimates Committee will initiate steps to impress upon the State Government for providing additional facilities for H.H. Rajah’s College here and introduction of evening courses, its Chairman, V. Mullai Vendhan, said here on Friday.

Speaking at a meeting held as part of its sitting in the district, Mr. Mullai Vendhan said that this was the only Government college in the district.

The Principal, K. Narayanaswamy, said it was tough to run the day college itself. Only 42 classrooms were available against the requirement of 84 for accommodating 2,800 students.

Construction of 10 class rooms was under way, but it would ease the congestion only to a small extent. The duration of practicals had been reduced from three hours to two following a shortage of computers. Even furniture was inadequate. Only three courses had been started in the evening college, despite demand from the students.

The Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Tiruchi, A. Syed Usman, said that although the Higher Education Department had introduced shift system in government colleges, no additional facilities were provided.

At the State Horticulture Farm near Kudumiyanmalai, the Chairman advised the Horticulture Officer, P. P. Sampathkumar, to utilise vacant space by raising nurseries of various horticultural crops.

At the Government Hospital at Tirumayam, the Resident Medical Officer, Mathuranthagi Kaliyamoorthy, submitted a memorandum to the Committee pleading for additional doctors, X-ray machine and a scanner. She also wanted the quarters to be repaired.

The Joint Director of Health and Rural Services (in-charge), S. Rajaram, said that the additional building for the hospital would ease the congestion of in-patients.

The members of the committee, C. Shanmugavelu, R.M. Subburam, M. Pannerselvam, S. P. Jayaraman and V. Sivapunniam and the District Collector, S. J. Chiru, accompanied the Chairman.
