Changes in livestock relief for suicide-prone districts

Special Correspondent

Changes to suit local practices

There will be no additional financial implications

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Friday approved changes in the special package for livestock and fisheries in the 31 identified suicide-prone districts in the four States of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

The changes in the package announced last year have been made on the suggestion of the State Governments to suit local practices and there will be no additional financial implications.

In Andhra Pradesh, the average cost for estrus synchronisation for livestock has been increased to Rs. 650 per animal instead of the originally envisaged Rs. 500 in the special package.

There will be no additional financial outgo because the increased amount will be met from the outlay for artificial insemination which has now been estimated at Rs. 300 instead of the earlier Rs. 450 per animal.

Additionally, instead of 10 fodder block making units there will be two and the remaining funds will be used to set up 100 mini feed blocks with a subsidy component of 50 per cent.

In Karnataka, de-worming, urea molasses block and mineral mixture will be permitted to bring animals into fertile heat instead of estrus synchronisation.

In Kerala, savings from providing artificial insemination coverage will be used for the supply of mineral mixture and kits for detection, prevention and control of mastitis.

In Maharashtra, as the practice of feeding fodder blocks is not common, beneficiaries will be allowed to avail feed concentrate which will be purchased by self-help groups.
