Kozhikode: High Court judge R. Basant on Saturday inaugurated the celebration of the 60th year of Independence and the discussion on ‘Freedom and responsibility.’ The programme was organised by the Malabar Chamber of Commerce here. Mr. Basant urged the people to fight corruption. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jacob Punnoose said democracy could not survive in a nation ridden with corruption. He said there were few who opposed corruption. Mr. Basant urged the people to be compassionate to the less privileged. Mr. Punnoose stressed the need to end the inequality that existed in society as well as organised economic crime. He said the people were so indifferent or perhaps tolerant to such situations that none had come forward to file a complaint on the hawala issue. Chamber president P. Zakeer presided. P.G. Anoop Narayanan, vice-president, and K.P. Aboobacker, honorary secretary, spoke on the occasion.
