Delhi cop injured in Jammu encounter

Staff Reporter

Alleged JeM commander killed in incident

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Sub-Inspector Devender Kumar sustained bullet injuries on his right leg in an exchange of fire with Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants in Jammu, in which Asif alias Kari, alleged divisional commander of the militant outfit in the Jammu region, was killed on Friday night.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Special Cell of the Delhi police with the Special Operation Group of the Jammu and Kashmir police. Asif was the alleged mastermind behind the Ram Janam Bhoomi attack in Ayodhya on July 7, 2005, and other terrorist activities in Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, the police said here on Saturday.

Arms, cash recovered

One of Asif’s alleged accomplices, Rehman alias Umar, a resident of Pakistan, has been arrested and a large quantity of arms, ammunition, cash and other material has been seized, the police added.

“In August 2005, two JeM militants — Mohammad Aslam and Khursheed Ahmad — were arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police with RDX, hand grenades and electronic detonators. During interrogation, the two disclosed that they were sent by Asif to set up base in the Capital. A technical and physical surveillance was then mounted to arrest Asif,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh at a press conference here.

In the first week of August, the Special Cell team developed specific information that the JeM militant along with other militants had shifted to Jammu.

The Special Cell team with the help of intelligence agencies then tracked his movement and launched the operation.
