‘Art pulled me into animation’

Staff Reporter

Phillip Edward Alexy

HYDERABAD: Cartoons have been capturing the hearts of everyone, be it young or old. The joy which these animated characters give, knows no bounds. A stress buster, a laughter riot, a comical journey, call it what you may. Cartoons definitely know the funny side of life. Who would know this better than Philip Edward Alexy, Hollywood’s leading animation expert.

His foray into the world of animation began way back in 1994, at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), an animation company set up by one of America’s leading film makers, George Lucas. But the way he planned it was totally different. “After high school, I opted for civil engineering at the University of Toronto. But I was in love with art. It was art that pulled me into animation. I quit engineering after 3 months because I couldn’t see my self designing sewers, traffic systems and bridges”, laughed Philip.

“Eventually, I joined a one year art programme at Sheridian College of Applied Arts and Technology, where I learnt the basics of art and the various aspects involved in it. After I finished the course, I landed myself a job at ILM and there was no looking back after that”, said Philip.

The Canadian born animator has worked on movies like Flubber, Star Wars, Jack Frost, Deep Impact, Mercury Rising, Eraser, Jumanji, Casper and computer games like Need For Speed: Underground and Prodigal, a third person shooter.
