PRIDE discusses waste management issues

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The city police have taken the first step towards implementing their “Clean City, Safe City” project, in association with residents’ associations.

The Kerala Builders’ Forum (KBF) made a slide presentation at the Police- Residents’ Associations Initiative in District Ernakulam (PRIDE) meeting on Saturday with regard to the project.

“The KBF has volunteered to set up bio-bin units for 100 residents’ associations in the first phase. The forum will manage these units for two months before handing it over to the respective associations,” City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said.

The Kerala Builders’ Association representatives were present. There was a suggestion that Rs. 50 be collected from each resident towards waste management. “We will discuss this among ourselves and return to them [the police]. We are also taking up the issue with the Ernakulam Merchants’ Union,” said P. Rangadasa Prabhu, president, Ernakulam District Residents’ Association Apex Council.

Representatives of the Manpower Exporters’ Association attended the meeting. “This is meant to give the residents’ association members direct access to the association and sort out visa-related issues,” Mr. Abraham said.

Institution of awards for sanitation and safety measures taken up by various agencies in the city was announced at the meeting.

The awards, each carrying a purse of Rs. 1 lakh, will be given to the cleanest residents’ association and the best Corporation ward, health inspector, health worker, college, school, institution fighting against drugs, traffic police member and bus driver. The awards will be distributed at PRIDE’s third anniversary meeting in September.
