Kozhikode: The National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) hosted a robotics workshop ‘LogIQ-Nexus’ on its campus on Saturday and Sunday. The workshop was organised by the student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) along with other associations and is a prelude to a series of robotics competitions Nexus conducted by the NIT-C in association with the IIT Mumbai. Nexus is a preliminary competition to Techfest, largest technical festival in Asia, conducted by the IIT Mumbai. The workshop was conducted by G. Venkatesh of Doctor Electronics (DOCEL) Bangalore. It focused on sensing circuits, hardware, microcontrollers and other basics of robotics. Around 55 teams comprising 110 students from the institute participated. The workshop began with a video demonstration of robotics, which included the popular Micromouse, Robosoccer and line-follower competitions. Then Dr. Venkatesh explained modern trends in robotics worldwide and why India was still backward in the field though the subject was gaining attention at the international level. On the second day, the students were able to make a line-follower robot. Later on, there were lessons on microcontrollers and programming. The workshop was conducted with a view to making the beginners, especially first year NIT-C students, competitive enough to participate in technical festival competitions which they would be participating in the coming years. It is the fifth in a series of robotics competitions organised by the branch at the NIT-C to promote robotics.
