Rs.88-crore proposals mooted for ADB-aided projects

Staff Reporter

To improve infrastructure for waste management projects

Aid of Rs.1,000 offered for biogas units installed between August 1 and October 2

Funds for buying equipment have been earmarked

KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation Council has mooted a Rs.88-crore proposal to improve infrastructure at the decentralised solid waste management projects aided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The council will meet on Monday to discuss proposals for buying 1,13,500 bins of 15 litre capacity each, 183 hand-carts, 140 autorickshaws, 21 tipper autorickshaws and 331 container wheelbarrows.

The Kochi Corporation also proposes to buy 200 bins of 240 litre capacity, 257 dumper containers, 13 double dumper placers, six covered tipper vehicles and two tipper lorries.

Proposals have been mooted for repairing and using the facilities owned by the Corporation. The ADB aided-projects will be implemented with the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme as its nodal agency.

Once the Corporation Council approves the proposals, the orders will be placed immediately. The improved infrastructure will help support the decentralised waste treatment and management programmes, said E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman, Town Planning Standing Committee of the Corporation.

The equipment bought will be distributed among the health circles to strengthen the waste collection and treatment facilities, he said.

The funds for buying the equipment have been earmarked as the Steering Committee of the Corporation has cleared the purchase proposal. The proposal comes at a time when the civic body is finding it difficult to manage the waste generated in the city.

The decentralised waste management programmes are currently being implemented only in a few divisions and the facilities for the schemes are arranged locally. The centralised purchase and distribution of containers and vehicles would improve the waste management initiatives, Mr. Sunilkumar said.

The Corporation’s proposal for providing assistance to those installing biogas units has evoked a positive response, he added.

The civic body has offered an assistance of Rs.1,000 for biogas units installed between August 1 and October 2. In Pachalam division alone, 50 residents have evinced interest in the proposal, Mr. Sunilkumar said.
