HYDERABAD: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has disqualified a city doctor, L. Sudhakar, from practising for three months for alleged medical negligence that led to the death of a pregnant woman and the unborn baby during labour in a city hospital in March, 2003. However, according to Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC), V. Ram Prasad, the Andhra Pradesh High Court gave a stay order on the MCI ruling when the disqualified doctor approached the court challenging the MCI decision. Last week, the MCI had recommended the name of Dr. Sudhakar to be struck off from the Indian Medical Registry for three months. “Dr. Sudhakar had approached the court very recently. According to information available with the APMC, the court has given a stay order on the whole issue. The APMC has not received any intimation about the disqualification from MCI,” said Dr. Prasad. K. Srikar Reddy, husband of the woman Srilatha, working as Consul at Consul General of India, Munich, had filed an appeal with the MCI after the ethics committee of APMC gave a clean chit to L. Sudhakar. As is the procedure, Mr. Reddy first approached APMC with his complaint and later made an appeal to reconsider the case to MCI. “Our council conducted thorough investigations before taking the decision to absolve Dr. Sudhakar from the allegations of medical negligence filed by K. Srikar Reddy. APMC is also a party in the case filed by Dr. Sudhakar in the High Court,” informed Chairman of the Ethics Committee for APMC, K. Ramesh Reddy. While the ethics committee of APMC gave a clean chit, the MCI found Dr. Sudhakar working in a city maternity hospital guilty of medical negligence. The MCI also asked Mr. Srikar Reddy to appeal to the Director of Health Services (DHS) of Andhra Pradesh for further action to be taken against the maternity home.
