HYDERABAD: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) was of the opinion that the recent attack on Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen was definitely a violation of human rights and assured that it would initiate action if someone lodged a complaint with the panel. Addressing the second anniversary celebrations of the SHRC here on Sunday, its chairman, B. Subhashan Reddy, said that the commission could not act over the incident in the absence of a formal complaint. It was not too late for it to take steps if somebody took the lead.

Justice Reddy announced that the commission will shortly launch a website hosting court judgements on human rights violations. It will also contain a wide range of information on human rights.

Conscious of rights

Director-General of Police M.A. Basith said the police force was conscious of the protection of human rights. However, police officers were at the receiving end in disposing of complaints as either the aggressors or victims nursed a grouse against them in many cases. The aggressors felt they were dealt harshly if action was taken against them and the victims felt the former were condoned if they were let off.

He also said the police tried to harmonise conflict between the aggressors and victims but did not often succeed.

V.S. Kaumudi, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said the current penalties were no longer a deterrent for traffic violations. A.B.K. Prasad. Chairman, State Official Language Commission, wanted human rights commissions to be given powers to punish violators.

The meeting was also addressed by A. Chakrapani, Chairman, State Legislative Council, P. Ramakrishnam Raju, former member of SHRC, and S. Chellappa, SHRC secretary.
