Woman kills children, immolates herself

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A 38-year-old woman allegedly burnt her two children to death, before immolating herself in her house in Nanmangalam village near Chromepet on Sunday.

Family problem is reported to be the cause, the Pallikaranai police said. Santhi locked herself inside the house along with her two children, Thenmozhi (18) and Kannan (16).

She allegedly poured kerosene on her children, set them on fire before immolating herself according to her parents and neighbours who were unable to help as the front and rear wooden doors and grille gates were locked from inside.

By the time neighbours broke open the grille gate and the wooden door, the three were charred to death.

Police shifted the bodies to the Chromepet Government Hospital for postmortem. On Friday, Santhi informed her parents that there were some problems in the family. Her parents came on Sunday and even as they were talking to her, Santhi sent them out and took the extreme step.

Her husband Velmurugan too was outside the house when the incident took place. He sustained minor injuries when he tried to break into the house in an attempt to rescue his wife and their children.

Velmurugan was running a pickle business earlier and is now working as a mason.

Kannan was working in a water distribution firm. Santhi was a housewife and her daughter Thenmozhi was at home after completing X Standard.

The Pallikaranai police are investigating.
