Udhagamandalam: With the recent High Court order and consequent developments putting the Nilgiri tea in the limelight, the hopes of thousands of small growers and plantation labourers have been raised with regard to fixing of price for raw tea leaves.
Passing an order on a plea made by the Nilgiri Tea Growers Protection Council to direct the Government to fix a minimum support price for raw tea leaves, the High Court had asked the Central and State Governments to take appropriate steps. Many small growers have welcomed Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s appeal to the Centre to fix a minimum price.
Expressing the hope that his appeal would be favourably considered by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Kamal Nath, they say all concerned must back the efforts being made to get remunerative price for the produce.
J.B. Subramaniam, founder, Nilgiri Small and Tiny Tea Growers Association, said if a floor price was fixed it would not only help the growers and workers raise their standard of living but also strengthen the economy of the district. He said if all political parties set aside their differences and shared a platform to highlight the demands of the tea planting community, it would become a trendsetter.
