CHIKMAGALUR: The loss due to heavy rain in Chikmagalur district has been estimated at Rs. 55.62 crore. The average rainfall from June 23 has exceeded by 71.7 per cent and there has been extensive damage to private property and standing crops in the Malnad region of the district. The damage to coffee plantations in about 5,000 acres has been estimated at Rs. 5 crore. According to the Horticulture Department, horticulture crops in 3,218 acres have been damaged to the extent of Rs. 4.68 crore. As many as 10 cattle head have perished and two persons have died in rain-related incidents, one each in Chikmagalur and Mudigere taluks. More than 250 houses have been partially damaged and 33 houses have collapsed. The loss is estimated to be Rs. 25.06 lakh. The damage to buildings belonging to the government has been estimated at Rs. 1.5 crore. In addition to this, Rs. 39.41 crore will be required to repair roads to the extent of 1,707 km and Rs. 2.83 crore for 158 bridges and culverts. The damage to 70 tanks is estimated to be Rs. 1.11 crore and damage to 1,018 electric poles and transformers has caused a loss of Rs. 58.71 lakh.
