TIRUCHI: The Government has a great responsibility in protecting water sources, according to R. Nallakannu, Communist Party of India leader.

Addressing a meeting organised by the Tiruchi Arivalar Peravai here on Sunday, Mr. Nallakannu said with urbanisation and industrialisation gathering a rapid pace, the demand for water would also increase manifold in the coming years.

Protection of water bodies had become imperative in today’s context given the vexed conflicts among States over sharing of river water, he pointed out.

Mr. Nallakannu said our forefathers had realised the importance of water and the ways to protect it by establishing various types of water bodies.

If agriculture as a sector was to be strengthened, it was vital for the Government and the people to protect the existing water bodies from extinction.

Though huge money was being spent on desilting works, several water bodies across the State had been encroached upon. The rampant sand mining added to the problem threatening the water source, he said and urged the Government to control the trend.
