SHARING A POINT: CPI (M) leader T.K.Rangarajan (right), with party MLA N. Nanmaran (second from left), at a seminar in Madurai on Sunday.
MADURAI: People should have a scientific understanding of the struggles for independence, for it will prepare them to fight modern imperialistic forces, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader T.K. Rangarajan has said. Speaking at a meeting got up to mark the 150th year of the First War of Indian Independence and the birth centenary of Bhaghat Singh, organised by the party here on Sunday, Mr. Rangarajan said the Congress, the hero of the freedom struggle, had turned a “supporter of imperialistic forces.” Its anti-imperialistic approach “got blunted” after independence, as industrialists badly needed foreign capital to develop their ventures. “When the country was begging for investment and capital from them, the Congress could not sustain the anti-imperialistic struggle.” Another attempt
The country was now facing another attempt at imperialism by giant companies and landlords, he said, drawing a parallel between the tactics adopted by the East India Company, such as free-trade, de-industrialisation, the doctrine of lapse and forced labour, and the present economic policies of globalisation, liberalisation and Special Economic Zones that allowed foreign countries to dominate Indian economy. “Now, 35 per cent of the country’s cement production is controlled by Swedish and French majors. The MNCs are now targeting sugar mills and smaller industries. Besides, they are trying to destroy traditional industries,” Mr. Rangarajan said. On its part, the Government was trying to give up minimum support price to farm produce, and fixing of price; it was allowing the market to fix the price. “Free trade is a one-way traffic. One cannot expect Somalia and Bangladesh to export to the U.S. and India respectively. Smaller nations are dying under globalisation,” he said. Everyday duty
“Speaking of independence struggle is not a mere annual ritual. It is an everyday duty. Just staging demonstrations is not anti-imperialistic struggle. Party cadres should educate the people on the issues so that there is a natural anger to fight the imperialistic attempts,” Mr. Rangarajan said. “It is only the Left which has remained an anti-imperialistic force till date.” Madurai MP P. Mohan, party MLA N. Nanmaran and rural district secretary V. Sundaram spoke.
