Rs.6.74 crore disbursed as education loans

Krishnagiri: Indian Bank will give priority to education loans. An amount of Rs. 6.74 crore was disbursed to students in Krishnagiri district so far to pursue various professional courses, the Executive Director of Indian Bank, A. Subramaniam, has said.

Participating in the centenary celebrations of Indian Bank here on Sunday Mr. Subramaniam said that education loans to the tune of Rs.400 crore were disbursed to 62,000 students in the country during 2006-07.

Indian Bank has disbursed Rs.135 crore as loans to 12,000 Self-help groups in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts so far.

Efforts have been initiated to cover all families in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts before December 2007.

The bank has introduced a new savings scheme to cover all children. As part of the scheme the bank will issue ATM cards to all children above 12 years who open such account. Loan for Agri clinic scheme is also being implemented to provide self-employment to unemployed veterinary and agriculture graduates.

Mr. Subramaniam distributed cash awards to students who emerged district toppers in the SSLC and Plus-Two examinations. Collector Santhosh Babu asked banks to increase the proportion of education loans in the district. He appealed to students to repay the loans promptly. The district administration was according top priority to families of out-of-school children by dove-tailing various government schemes. Assistant General Manager Indian Bank G. Muthappan spoke.
