Police book case against MIM legislator; court likely to issue summons too

To verify whether she made any offensive remarks against Islam

HYDERABAD: Video footage of Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin’s speech at the Press Club of Hyderabad minutes before the MIM attack on her will be submitted to the police on Monday.

This will provide vital clues to verify whether she had made any offensive remarks against Islam during the book release function at the Press Club on Thursday.

Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi had lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Ms. Nasrin’s statements had hurt the sentiments of Muslims. The police booked a case against her under Section 153-A (inciting enmity between different groups) of the IPC. on his complaint.

Ms. Nasrin had not made any remarks against Islam. She had only explained the reasons for her stay in Kolkata in her ten-minute speech, the CFI chairman N. Innaiah said on Sunday.

The organisation had videographed the entire proceedings of the meeting, before a mob led by three MIM legislators attacked Ms. Nasrin.

After a case was registered against Ms. Nasrin, the police requested Mr. Innaiah to provide a copy of the video footage to verify the claims of Mr. Owaisi.

Case against Owaisi

Meanwhile, the city police late on Saturday night booked a case against Mr Akbaruddin Owaisi and are also collecting evidence against the MIM leader for arresting him on charges of issuing threatening statements openly against the writer.

Video footage of news channels that beamed his statement at the Punjagutta police station was being collected to submit them to the court on Monday as evidence. “If the court is satisfied with the evidence, it will allow us to arrest him and file a charge sheet,” explained ACP Punjagutta L. K. Shinde on Sunday. The court may also issue summons to Mr. Owaisi seeking explanation on evidence submitted by the police against him.
