KNM president passes away

T. Abdul Azeez Moulavi

MALAPPURAM: Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) president and managing editor of Varthamanam daily T. Abdul Azeez Moulavi, 76, died at a private hospital near here on Sunday afternoon.

He will be laid to rest at the Mankada

Town Juma Masjid graveyard at 11 a.m. on Monday. The body will be kept at the Mankada Orphanage auditorium at 8.30 a.m. for the public to pay homage.

The Moulavi was known as a historian, Islamic scholar, Arabic language researcher and a political observer. He has authored several books. Born at Mankada in Malappuram district in 1931, the Moulavi was the Chief Editor and general manager of Chandrika daily from 1989 to 1999. After securing his degree from Madras University and Aligarh Muslim University, the Moulavi worked as a teacher at different high schools and colleges, including Farook College, Feroke. He was Principal of M.E.S. Mampad College, Mampad, for four years.

He was also a visiting professor of Islamic studies at the Calicut University.

The Moulavi was president of Mankada Orphanage Committee; member of the expert committee for Arabic textbooks at Calicut University; member of the Faculty of Languages; member of the State Curriculum Committee; member of the erstwhile Pre-Degree Board; member of Calicut University Senate; member of the Minority Commission; and member of MES central executive committee.

He was the founder-president of the Kerala State Arabic Teachers Federation.

He is survived by his wife Fathimath Zuhra and seven children.
