Party has gone by general sentiment among cadres Denies misappropriation in Deshabhimani deal
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has attributed wrong motives on the part of the media in dubbing the acceptance of Rs.2 crore as deposit by its newspaper Deshabhimani as ‘bribe ry.’ In a press release issued here on Sunday, the party said that it had taken a decision to accept financial assistance from well-wishers and advertisers for the newspaper’s expansion programme. The money was to be returned to the depositors after a specific period with interest. Among the deposits thus collected, there had been criticism about four deposits of Rs. 50 lakh each. Better discretion
The sentiment among the party members and supporters was that the newspaper’s financial requirements could have been fulfilled without depending on such big deposits and without taking the assistance of people with doubtful background. All these factors were taken into consideration when the party decided to return the four deposits of Rs.50 lakh each and have the issue further inquired into by the State secretariat. This affair did not involve any financial irregularity or misappropriation, the CPI(M) said. (At a press conference here on Sunday, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat said that there was no report of any financial irregularity in the affairs of the Deshabhimani.) The inquiry found that when the project was implemented in the Deshabhimani, E.P. Jayarajan had not shown the required vigilance as the newspaper’s general manager. The State committee of the party unanimously decided to remove Mr. Jayarajan from the post in view of his lapse in performing his responsibilities, the party said. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat and Polit Bureau members S. Ramachandran Pillai and R. Umanath also attended the State committee meeting, the statement said.
