Chennai: Juniors from 20 States will battle it out at six venues across the city from Monday. The adidas-MCC National junior tennis championship has been an annual feature in the city for 14 years so far. The 15th edition promises plenty, with no conspicuous absentees from the list. There is a lot at stake for the likes of top seeds Vijayant Malik (boys’ under-18) and Mohit Mayur (boys’ u-14). Sponsors adidas will provide equipment worth Rs.75,000 each for the boys’ and girls’ u-18 singles winners and equipment worth Rs.35,000 each for the u-14 singles winners. The winners will also receive 75 AITA points. The players have some marquee names preceding them with the tournament having served as a springboard for the likes of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna. “There have been a record number of entries this time around,” MCC President, Premkumar Karra, said on the 597 entries registered. Besides MCC, the matches will be played at the MGC, TNTA-Egmore, KTC, Cosmopolitan Club and Gandhinagar Club. Tamil Nadu’s V.
