CHENNAI: At 34 years, N. Arul Selvi (Indian Bank) is nowhere near her best. Now into coaching, Selvi, a mother of one, hardly has time to train. Such is the quality of the younger crop that Selvi is still able to conjure victories even now. Her maiden women’s title win in tough seven games (11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 10-12, 8-11, 12-10, 11-7) this season over N. Sathyabama (SDAT AKG) in the final of the JVS Rao memorial ninth State-ranking table tennis tournament at the Hall of TT, Nehru Stadium, showed that she still has a few more tricks up her sleeve. In an entertaining men’s final, Sivananda Seshadri (IOC) played his normal attacking game to overwhelm R. Rajesh (LIC) to triumph in close seven games (14-12, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10). The men’s summit clash could have gone either way. In the seventh and deciding game, Rajesh saved a match point at 9-10, but Sivananda had the nerve to win the next two points. S. Ganesan, President, TNTTA, gave away the prizes. Other results: Men (semifinals): R. Rajesh bt R.S. Raja (SDAT-C) 11-9, 11-7, 12-14, 9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10; Sivananda Seshadri bt K.
