6 more Hindi-speaking people killed

Guwahati: Six more people, four of them Hindi-speaking, were killed on Sunday in two incidents in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. Suspected militants of the Karbi Longri National Liberation Front and the United Liberation Front of Asom carried out the latest attacks in the hill district.

In the first incident in the early hours of Sunday, four Hindi-speaking people, including a woman, were killed at Rongbonghat village under Bokajan police station. In the other incident, which occurred around 7.30 p.m. at Parakhowa under Howraghat police station, two bullet-riddled bodies were recovered by police. The bodies were yet to be identified.

Police said that about 12 militants in battle fatigues went to Dehori village of Borhat police outpost. They led Mohankanu Gupta (43) and his wife Sheela Gupta (30) at gunpoint to the adjoining Rongbonghat village where they took four more Hindi-speaking villagers hostage.

The six were taken to a secluded spot around 3 a.m. and fired upon. While four of them fell to the bullets, two escaped, one with injuries. Apart from the Guptas, those killed were identified as Mahabir Swami (20) and Nandalal Swami (30).

Ramesh Swami and Banu Swami, who escaped, were admitted to the Numaligarh Refinery Hospital.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who visited Bokakhat, told a gathering of Hindi-speaking people that steps had been taken to shift isolated Hindi-speaking families to safer places and shelter them in temporary camps for better security coverage.

A total of 41 Hindi-speaking people had taken shelter in a camp at Bokakhat while 87 families were shifted to safer places in the district.

The Purvottar Hindustani Yuvak Samaj and the All-Assam Bhojpuri Yuva Chatra Parishad have called a 12-hour Assam bandh on Tuesday to protest against the killing of Hindi-speaking people.
