Unidentified men sprinkle inflammable liquid before setting her ablaze

Incident occurred outside her house in the upmarket Greater Kailash Part-II

NEW DELHI: In a case most bizarre, two unidentified men sprinkled some inflammable liquid on a fashion designer and set her afire outside her house in the Capital’s upmarket Greater Kailash Part-II area on Saturday night. The victim is battling for life at Safdarjung Hospital with 80 per cent burns.

According to the police, the men rang the door-bell around 8 in the evening and when 36-year-old Mona Suri came out, they poured some inflammable liquid on her and set her ablaze. The men then drove away on a motorcycle. Mona’s two daughters were at home at the time of the incident.

Mona ran inside the house screaming for help.

Her mother-in-law Kusum Suri, who lives on the ground floor, tried to put out the fire but suffered burns in the process. She later told the police that she had seen two men driving off on a motorcycle.Mona was rushed to Holy Family Hospital, from where she was referred to Safdarjung Hospital. The police said her condition was very critical.

A fashion designer, Mona was working in a South Delhi hotel. Her relatives alleged that she had lately been receiving threats and that an attempt on her life had also been made a few days ago. At the time of the incident, her husband Naveen Suri was in Goa in connection with his business.

He works for a tour and travel agency at Nehru Place.

Naveen arrived in the Capital on Sunday morning after being informed of the incident. Investigations by the police have revealed that Naveen has a close relationship with another woman and this was a source of discord between him and Mona.

The police are trying to find if the woman had any role to play in the attack.

Stating that Mona’s statement had been recorded, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) Anil Shukla said the police were not ruling out Naveen’s involvement in the incident.

He and other family members were questioned on Sunday evening. “We are in the process of reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to the incident,” said Mr. Shukla.

An attempt-to-murder case has been registered.
