Building plans to be made online, says Mayor

Staff Reporter

‘Bid to put in place a transparent system to end corruption’

‘The online property tax deposition scheme was a great success’

‘MCD is importing the best technology for solid waste management’

NEW DELHI: Mayor Arti Mehra has said that a scheme for filing building plans and getting approval online would be instated within three months. The online system would render the process transparent and rid it of corruption.

Session

Speaking at an interactive session with members of the PHD Chamber here over the weekend, Ms. Mehra said: “We are endeavouring to put in place a public friendly transparent system to reduce and eliminate corruption. The plans of getting building approval online are similar to the online property tax deposition scheme of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.”

The online property tax deposition scheme was a “great success” and more than 1.5 lakh people had availed themselves of the facility, she claimed.

The Mayor said a major source of confusion for the public was that they found it difficult to hold a single agency responsible for any lapse. “Ordinary people get confused in the midst of several agencies. A glaring example is that while zonal plans are under the purview of the Centre, the MCD is responsible for local plans.”

The civic body was conducting regular talks with the Lieutenant-Governor and the Chief Minister for coordinating development works.

Ms. Mehra disclosed that the MCD was importing the best technology for solid waste management and intended to make Delhi a “zero-waste zone”.

There were plans to convert solid waste into low grade cement which would be used for construction purposes.

Though a productive public-private partnership was a vital requirement for development, the Mayor said past experiences had not been very encouraging.

Rates

Land allotted to private parties at subsidised rates for running charitable hospitals was being misused, she explained.

Petty party politics should not hinder the grand plan that the MCD had of carrying out an image makeover for the city, she added.

Common man

Sanjay Bhatia, PHD Chamber president, said there should be a greater participation of the common man in improving civic services.
