TIRUCHI: Education must be employment-generative and encourage an inquisitive mind, said the Vice-Chancellor of the Bharathidasan University, M. Ponnavaiko. Learning must be through discovery and students must be equipped with employability skills when they come out of their college, he said. Releasing the books authored by the Director of Institute of Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD), K. Parthasarathy, on Thursday, Dr. Ponnavaiko said that the educational system must ensure economical security for students. Referring to the system of education at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Ponnavaiko stressed on the need for active learning methodologies. Vocational education should be made mandatory for all and students must be taught basic computer-based courses apart from the regular curriculum. Receiving the first copies of the books, the Director of SCOPE, M. Subburaman, said that the greatest challenge in villages was sanitation. He described the book on sanitation authored by Mr. Parthasarathy as “custom-made for rural India.” Case studies
The books, ‘Child Labour: a socioeconomic outlook’ and ‘Ecological Sanitation,’ deal with case studies conducted at various places and legal aspects of child labour. Suggestions from various environmental activists for eco sanitation have been provided. Over 300 participants, including school dropouts, who underwent certificate and diploma courses in basic computer operations, desk top publishing, Tally, computer hardware and programming, were awarded certificates of completion on the occasion. The Project Director, IECD, S.V.A. Prakash, spoke.
