RIMS has expensive and sophisticated equipment but no doctors in super speciality wings
KADAPA: The Government was considering cancellation of deputations and mismatching of all specialist doctors in the wake of their shortage, Minister for Medical Education, Galla Aruna Kumari said on Sunday. The Minister told the District Review Committee meeting in the Collectorate Sabha Bhavan that RIMS had expensive and sophisticated equipment but faced paucity of doctors in super speciality wings. Money was not the criteria but services of specialists should be drawn for RIMS at Kadapa, she said. GO issued
As 53 professors were due to retire this year end and 40 more next year, the Government issued a G.O. enhancing their retirement age to 60, the Minister said. The Government could reappoint retired professors if needed, MLC Shaik Hussain suggested. Kamalapuram MLA G. Veerasiva Reddy suggested transfer of long-standing professors and assistant professors from Osmania and Gandhi hospitals to RIMS. When Proddatur MLA N. Varadarajulu Reddy and MLC Shaik Hussain suggested that experienced doctors working in primary health centres for several years could be posted to RIMS, Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said they could be considered for posts of civil assistant surgeons and tutors, but doctors having teaching experience could alone be posted as professors and assistant professors. Mydukur MLA D.L. Ravindra Reddy sought autonomous status to RIMS hospital. He said specialists were serving on contract basis and if post-graduates went back to PHCs, RIMS would face acute shortage of doctors. He suggested posting of neurosurgeon of Kurnool Seetharam as superindent of RIMS hospital, considering his experience. Remedy situation
The Minister advised MPs and MLAs of Kadapa district not to recommend transfer of doctors from the district to Osmania or other bis hospitals. Mr. Vararadajulu Reddy and Dr. Ravindra Reddy urged the Minister not to consider their letters, but take decisions to remedy the situation. Proddatur MLA suggested amendment of rules to make it mandatory for candidates passing MBBS to work for four or five years in rural areas, before giving them registration as doctors. Expensive and modern equipment would become defunct if not used for long periods, Rajampet MLA K. Prabhavathamma observed. Ms. Aruna Kumari said she would arrange a meeting with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at Hyderabad soon, where public representatives could thrash out the issue. The Minister said existing doctors should be rectified and sought cooperation of public representatives.
