BHUBANESWAR: Six monocellate cobras have been born in the Nandankanan Zoological Park here, taking the total number of such species in the zoo to nine.“This is for the first time in the history of Nandankanan that six monocellate cobras have been born from the single clutch of eggs,” Park Director Ajit Patnaik said. All the six young cobras were healthy and active, he said, while terming the development as a major breakthrough for the Park. The baby snakes were recently hatched from a clutch of eggs of a captive monocellate cobra at the reptile park . Monocellate cobra (Naja Kaouthia) differs from spectacled cobra in having only a single yellow or orange ‘O’- shaped mark on the hood. According to Mr. Patnaik, the number of the species in wild was declining because people kill them at the first due to fear. Nandankanan is planning to start a well designed education programme on snakes to generate awareness about the conservation of snake, Mr. Patnaik added.
