Shimla: As part of its efforts to check skewed sex ratio, the Himachal Pradesh Government has rewarded 12 Panchayats in the State for having best female birth record. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh gave Rs.5 lakh to each of the Panchayats in 12 districts for their best female ratio during the year 2005. “So far, 96 families have joined the Indira Gandhi Balika Yojna, where families adopting permanent family planning after the birth of single and second girl child are rewarded a cash prize of Rs.25,000 and Rs.20,000 respectively,” Mr. Singh said at the first ceremony organised by State Health and Family Welfare Department. According to a latest official estimate, the over all female sex ratio which was 897 in 2001 has now improved to 968 per 1000 male in the state. — PTI
